Author’s note: this is an e-mail I sent to the ‘Fun Committee’ for my department at work. They come up with office events like ‘Sunglasses Day’ and ‘Dessert Potluck Day’. I wanted to contribute.
Hello Fun Committee—
I had some really fun ideas I wanted to share with you. I have a bookmark for a silly holiday website and I check it from time to time to see what sorts of wild and crazy things are being celebrated around the globe. I hope some of these we can use for our next office event or happening!
July 18th – National Caviar Day (http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/July/caviarday.htm)
It would be a blast to spend our 15 minute breaks, or even our lunch/dinner breaks for seafood lovers, chowing down on some caviar. What a great way to beat the heat, eating a salty fish egg treat. Maybe a prize for whoever eats the most caviar??
July 22nd – Ratcatcher’s Day (http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/July/ratcatchersday.htm)
Did you know that the Pied Piper was a real guy? It’s true! According to legend, he rid the town of Hamelin of their rat infestation. Then, as leverage to ensure he was fairly compensated, he kidnapped all the children in town and hid them in a cave. Anyways, since we don’t have any rat catchers working in the office, I think it would be fun to hide some pictures of Stanley around the office like a scavenger hunt. If you catch a rat, bring it to their Team Leader and they’ll reward you with a tune from a toy flute. I don’t think there’s an office-friendly way to incorporate the weird child abduction part of this story, so maybe just the scavenger hunt.
July 24th – Amelia Earhart Day (http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/July/ameliaearhart.htm)
Amelia Earhart is a world-famous record-breaking pioneer of aviation. To celebrate this holiday, what if we all took an alternate route to work on the 24th and whoever gets lost forever is given an honorary plaque. Or maybe instead we could just make little pilots licenses and take photos next to Jon Patterson’s airplane model collection.
These are just the ones that caught my eye. The full list for July is here: http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/july.htm
All of them look like fun (except maybe Disobedience Day.)
